What is HS?

HS also known as Hidradenitis Suppurativa. Is a chronic inflammatory skin condition. This disease creates lumps and lesions commonly found in the armpit and groin. Other locations can be under the breast, on the chest, neck, inner thighs, and buttocks region. 

These skin lesions happen when the sweat glands are inflamed and infected. This condition features a variety of different size lumps that are painful to the suffer and grow in size as the lumps fill with infection. These lumps are known to drain pus and can present a foul odor. 

There is no cure for this disease, but it can be managed with an array of different methods. Some examples are medications, steroid injections, and sometimes surgery. There is no one size fits all situation when it comes to managing HS. 

Hidradenitis Suppurativa is commonly found in women however this disease does not discriminate against gender. Because Hidradenitis Suppurativa is caused by the blockage of hair follicles both men and women can have this disease. Doctors and specialist don't know why this blockage occurs. 

There are a lot of different contributing factors to why the blockage can occur. Some experts believe its connected to hormones, genetics, smoking or weight. There was a time when this disease was considered rare and that's because only the severe cases were being reported. New research has shown that Hidradenitis Suppurativa effects 1 in 100 people now that milder cases are also being reported.

Hidradenitis Suppurativa can cause scaring and can be visible. HS is known not only to affect the body but also the suffers mental. Depression is common with this disease effecting 16.9% of adults. Other psychiatric disorders can be found in patients with HS including substance abuse for example. To paint a clearer picture, it is said that HS is the most painful skin disease!
